Getting a Commercial Playground for your School

Nearly every elementary school and fast food restaurant in the United States has a commercial playground. With an assortment of slides, ball pits, monkey bars, and jungle gyms to choose from, each commercial playground is slightly different. Some parents will have to cater to a child’s needs by going to a certain fast food place, even if it is out of the way. Children know which restaurants have playgrounds, and they will always choose the one with the commercial playground that is the most fun to play on. Even though the kids have fun, the parents are happy that they get to have a few minutes of calm while their son or daughter is distracted with the commercial playground. At my elementary school, I remember having a giant slide that must have been at least as tall as a two-story building.

You had to climb a very narrow and steep metal staircase to get to the top. At the top of the stairs was a small area where one or two kids could stand up and wait to go down the slide. This area was circular, covered in a metal roof that came to a single point, making a cone shape, so the whole thing resembled a castle tower. Using his imagination, there was always one boy who acted as the “castle guard.” This person would have to check and make sure there were not any imposters trying to go down the slide. As you came to the top of the steps, he would have to give you the signal to go. And while no one was ever denied by this guard, we all believed he kept our playground safe from intruders.

Commercial playground equipment has gotten much safer in the last few years, and as a result, the old slide I used to love has since been taken out. Looking back, it probably was a little too dangerous for us kids, but we loved it anyway. I am sure if our moms had been able to see us on that slide at recess, it would have been taken out long ago. Even though playgrounds have gotten safer, the equipment seems to be getting more and more complex. Taking a child of your own to a playground today, you will notice elaborate spreads of playground equipment in almost every park, and it makes you wish you could be a kid again. And these new playgrounds are not just intricately put together, most of them are made of recycled material, making them very environmentally friendly.

Many plastics today are recycled to make all kinds of different things, and playgrounds are one of those products. Plastics are either broken down to their smallest parts and then reformed, or simply melted and then reformed, depending on the type of plastic and which method is easier. Either way, the plastic is reused to reduce pollution and decrease the need for new plastic. Often, the plastic will be combined with a filler, which helps conserve even more plastic. These fillers are usually made of sawdust or a weaker plastic, and no matter what it is, it will always be safe for children to play on, both chemically and mechanically.

Commercial playgrounds have certainly come a long way since my elementary school days. While kids today may not have the same opportunity to play on a slide that nearly reaches the stratosphere, they have some newer equipment that can be even more fun to play on. And much of this new equipment is made with mostly recycled material, which helps save the environment, something that should be very important to every child and parent.
