Love & Romance – I Love That Feeling

Look, anybody could write an article about the the merits and wonders of the most popular romance films to come along in the past 25 years. Everybody’s seen ‘Titanic,’ and most seem to have loved it. Indeed, a blockbuster film seemed to finally live up to the expectations. And, everybody and their mother will tell you that ‘The Notebook’ is the greatest romance thing to hit the big screen since ‘Gone With the Wind.’

But, how about giving the lesser known romance films some play, some love, some kudos. They deserve some mention also, and many times they will be as good or even better than the mainstream options we’ve all  come to know and love. Here’s a couple to consider the next time you’re looking for some light-hearted fare.

If Lucy Fell (1996) – If you’re a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker, then you’ll love this little film. She’s as cute as ever, and the other roles are filled to perfection by Elle Macpherson, Ben Stiller, and Eric Shaeffer. Basically, two roommates (Parker and Shaeffer) find solace in the fact that neither one of them can seem to find love. So, they make a pact to jump off the Brooklyn bridge at the end of the current month if neither has found somebody special. It’s not as dark as it sounds, and I won’t spoil the finish.

The Night We Never Met (1993)- Matthew Broderick has been in quite a few romance films, but this may be the least known and the best he’s ever made. This is just as light-hearted as ‘If Lucy Fell’ and the performances are just as good. Along with Broderick, there’s also Jeanne Tripplehorne, and Annabella Sciorra and Justine Bateman coming along for the ride. Basically, a few individuals looking for some private time in their hectic lives decide to share a sublet apartment in NYC, but the three new tenants will agree to alternate nights and therefore never meet. Eventually, they all do meet, and the antics that ensue will have you laughing out loud.

So, there’s two lesser known Romance films to consider looking for the next time you’re searching for the best romance movies to watch at home. It’s likely you responded with skepticism when I said that there is no need for despair, since you can’t fathom how I, a stranger could possibly offer you reassurance when I don’t really know you or your partner personally.

I’m not going to lie to you, you’re entitled to thinking that. But I kid you not, regardless of what your issues may be, these ways to save a marriage could do wonders for your relationship.

Be open for communication

Remember the courtship days, when the two of you were just getting to know each other, falling deeper in love with one another as you did so? Back then, neither of you could keep their hands off each other. Once one of you was alone, the other would be sorely missed – so much so that one of your relationship’s greatest strengths was the desire to be with each other.

It only makes sense for you to continue to be there for each other if you want to stay together. While it’s probably unrealistic for you to expect the same fervor as you had when you first started out, the effort of being there alone speaks volumes on how much you want the marriage to work.


Be open to advice of others

Keep in mind that though you and your partner know your marriage more than anyone else, when it comes to dealing with serious conflict, either of you may be too focused on your side of the argument to resolve anything. What’s more, it’s likely neither of you are experts in conflict management, especially in regard to relationships. Isn’t that why you’re looking for ways to save a marriage in the first place?

If your goal is to save your marriage at all costs, then you can’t afford to let pride or skepticism get in the way of accomplishing it. Listen to friends, go to a marriage counselor, or seek out other credible sources of information. Just don’t shut out outside help entirely. These references may offer you and your partner new perspective and give your marriage new life.
