For gardeners that are looking to add an elegant, graceful and well loved rose bush to their garden, an old or ancient rose may be an excellent choice. These plants date back to ancient times and are well known for their beauty, disease resistance and lovely flowers. One of the oldest types of roses is the Alba rose.

The Alba rose is extremely beautiful.  It can grow between 5-12 feet tall and 3-8 feet wide depending on the specific variety that is planted.  This rose bush is known for its long, arching canes that can extend up to 15 feet for some types of Albas.  This plant typically produces late spring or early summer flowers that last a few weeks before disappearing for the season. These rose bushes produce cute blooms in shades of white, cream and pink.

The Alba roses are easy to grow, disease resistent and perform well in sunny locations in planting zones 3 to 9. They require very little attention and are pruned immediately after flowering.  Flowers will only appear on old wood and not on new growth, unlike many types of modern roses.  In addition, this plant will bloom only once per year.

There are many different varieties of Alba rose such as the Morning Blush and Queen of Denmark.  Morning Blush has gorgeous white flowers that have a hint of pink around the borders of the petals.  This bush typically grows to about 6 feet tall.  The Morning Blush is not the most fragrant variety of Alba roses.  The Queen of Denmark has a stronger aroma.  This rose bush has elegant pink flowers.  It performs very well in zones 4-8.

Old roses remain popular around the world due to their simple elegance and because they are easy to grow.  These types of roses require little attention from you.  They make wonderful cut flowers or can be left on the plant to accent your back yard.

These make wonderful hedges, look great in a mixed shrub border or grow them as a specimen plant. It is easy to see why Rosa rugosa alba is one of the highest rated roses by the American Rose Society – highly fragrant, disease resistant, winter hardy, easy to maintain, and its wonderful large hips.
