The Story of the Star Spangled Banner

Just thinking about the United States makes people think about the country’s national anthem – the Star Spangled Banner. This particular song is being known even to other countries. I mean, who hasn’t heard of the Star Spangled Banner? Every person may have heard of it since it is being sung at the beginning of every major American event. Its popularity has led many people to wonder about the story of the Star Spangled Banner.

The War of 1812 between America and England was where the Star Spangled Banner story began. Washington was invaded and captured by the British then, and the next plan by the British was to bombard Baltimore which at that time was partly protected by Fort McHenry.

In September 1814, the British had captured Dr. William Beanes during the British invasion of Washington. Because if this, two Americans were sent to negotiate for the doctor’s release from captivity. The two negotiators were lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key and Colonel John Skinner. The two negotiators, however, learned on the planned attack on Baltimore and Fort McHenry during the process of negotiation. This caused all three men to be detained on a British ship.

On the dawn of September 13, 1814, the major attack happened with heavy artillery raining red streaks across the night sky. The three men could not do anything but watch as the attack was happening. It was mentioned in the Star Spangled Banner history that during all that time, Key could see the American flag waving from where he was.

The attack did not stop until night. Whether Baltimore had fallen or the British forces had lost, Key had no idea for he could not see anything in the dark. But as the dawn came and the sun began to show itself, Key saw the American flag waving proudly over Fort McHenry.

Francis Scott Key made the Star Spangled Banner song lyrics during this particular event. It was distributed all over the country and was published as a poem. It was then made popular as a song by incorporating the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven” which was, ironically, an English drinking song. It then became known as the Star Spangled Banner as more and more people started singing the song. It was in March 3, 1931 that the Star Spangled Banner was made as the official national anthem of the United States of America through an act of congress.

As it permeates the room, mixed with the scent of my bath and candles, I am in another world, totally relaxed without a care in the world.
