Vibration Isolators

Removing unwanted vibration can be a simple or complicated process, all depending on what sorts of vibrations need to be isolated. The different types of vibration isolators will be able to cancel out either vertical vibration, horizontal vibration, or a combination of the two. The types of vibration requiring multiple types of isolation are likely to be the most complex and will be used to protect against many different forces of nature. Vertical vibration isolators will provide cushion and resistance against any unwanted vertical motion. It does this with both positive and negative spring resistance. The positive resistance will restrict the force from continuing any farther, while the negative resistance will allow the force to be absorbed so that the resistance is not so severe.

Vertical vibration isolators will be in use in a number of buildings that have common impacts with gravity. A gym floor will have these kinds of isolators to prevent injuries and to help the athletes jump higher. An elevator will also utilize vertical vibration isolators. The changes in sea level from an elevator will cause some discomfort to the passengers, but in the isolators are in place, it will absorb some of the fluctuation. Horizontal vibration isolators will be used mostly for seismic protection for buildings. These are present in pretty much every part of the country, because they have all experienced an earthquake. These types of isolators will have vertical columns that have a certain level of rigid stiffness.

When the building experiences a seismic disturbance or another sort of horizontal motion, the springs will react contrary to that motion. In events such as earthquakes, the will be a repeating horizontal motion. These columns will keep the building stationary because the stiffness is being actuated by the seismic motion. When that motion calms down, the stiffness of the columns will do likewise, and so they will keep the building at a relatively stationary plane. More complicated than both of these isolators is the tilt-motion isolator. Basically, this device prevents structures from falling over. In order to do this, the thinkers behind these isolators had to figure out a way to dampen the vibration coming from many different angles and many different levels of pressure. In order to do this, there would need to be applications to every side of the structure.

Imagine that a building is being tipped over by the wind. The direction that it is being tipped to needs to have positive resistance to keep that side from caving in. The other side of the building would need to have negative resistance in order to keep that side in contact with the ground. To achieve all of these task separately would involve a very expensive operation with a countless number of springs unless a better way was found. There would have to be a way that one area receiving pressure would have connections to every side so that they would react in the opposite way, further reducing the likelihood of the building tipping over. The developers have been able to engineer a tilt-motion vibration isolator capable of absorbing pressure from all angles, and that can employ the forces from all sides if just one receives pressure.

This isolator would have a central pin with perpendicular, circular plates. On various sides of the circular plates there are U-shaped dampers. Because all of these dampers are connected by the two plates, if one side receives pressure, the rigidity of the circular plate will cause the other springs to react. You have not only the stiffness of the one spring, but all the combined tensions from the stiffness of many springs working together to keep unwanted vibration out.
