The first stern New England missionaries arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1820. By the middle 1800s, most of the native people had been Christianized, and at least partially Westernized, and mainland church groups were beginning to cut off financial support. Sons of the missionaries began looking for raw material rather than spiritual rewards. Happily for them, the King now was selling off large parcels of local land for small amounts, even giving land free of charge to those who caught his fancy. “The missionaries taught us how to raise our eves to Heaven,” quips entertainer Do Ho, “and when we looked down the land was gone.”

For many missionary sons, the pot at the end of their rainbow was filled with sugar. The first fortunes were made in sugar during the California Gold Rush of 1849. As the years passed, great fortunes also were made in pineapples and ranching, but great fortunes bring great problems. The plantation and ranch owners needed a large steady supply of strong men who would do stoop labour for low wages, for the Hawaiians, although good workers, were self-supporting; and they didn’t trust the local government, fearing the loss of their land in some political upheaval.

They solved the first problem by pressuring the government to make laws permitting the importation of labourers from abroad. The first group of Chinese came in 1852, followed by waves of Japanese, Portuguese, Filipinos, and Koreans. The second was solved by the 1887 overthrow of the government, setting the stage for the 1898 United States annexation of Hawaii.

‘A Shiny Beach’, Australia, Wilson Promontory, Whiskey Bay

I spent the last few days traveling with friends through the southeastern coastal areas of Victoria. Phillip’s Island and Wilson’s Promontory National Park are great areas with spectacular beaches. The area is a bit drier than the Great Ocean Road. As a consequence, the vegetation is different. You have more bush-like shrubbery and trees. The coast has fewer cliffs and it’s much easier to access the oceanfront.

The beaches in Wilson’s Promontory National Park are extremely interesting as shown above. The beaches very gradually ascend from the ocean level. This allows the surf to come in and drain off in a very slow manner. As a result of this process, the beaches become extremely reflective. Sand is normally warm and inviting but add a reflective, glossy quality and the character of a beach completely transforms.
