A Good Kayak Outing

This past June, on a cooler day when sunning wasn’t really possible, I had my first kayaking lesson. It was a recreational kayak designed for beginners so it was stable and easy to get in and out of. It also happened to be blue. I was instructed as to how to lower my body into the boat by holding on to the edge of the dock and carefully balancing my weight evenly so as not to tip over. Much to my surprise and joy (as I wouldn’t really have wanted to fall into the cool Canadian lake so early in the season, I easily found my butt comfortably seated in the single-person kayak. Ok! Now that the tricky part was over the exercise was about to begin! I pushed myself away from the dock and began paddling away from the dock.
Funny thing! Although I was basically clueless I was able to manage to move the kayak at fairly good clip.

My instructor in a boat besides me offered me advice as the boat moved quickly away from my perceived safety of the dock. I was told to hold the paddle with my arms extended. I was also informed of the best way for the paddle not to swing the paddle too deeply into the water. Although the wind was pushing the kayak in a direction I did not wish to go, with my guide in the boat next to me I was able to learn to turn the kayak by paddling backwards and then forward when I had pointed the blue kayak in the right direction.

I couldn’t believe it but after about 10 minutes in the water, I had successfully learned how to maneuver the kayak is a fairly strong wind (well for a beginner anyway). With a good kayak and the help of a few minutes of instruction I was soon paddling towards the middle of lake. After about 45 minutes in the water, I had decided I had enough and paddled back to the dock. I was terrified that my upper body wouldn’t move when I got out of bed the next morning from my total lack of muscles in my arms and chest, but I was wrong! While slightly sore in the morning, I was certainly able to get on with all my everyday tasks the following day! My first day in a kayak was a total success.

The summer holidays are here now, and it is time of leisure and fun. In hours I will have to say good bye to you for some days. It is necessary to prepare the luggage, the camera, the batteries, memory cards…

Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. At 512 meters it is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola. Rising sharply to the north-west, it affords spectacular views over the city and the surrounding coastline.[1]

There is an amusement park, a telecommunications tower (Torre de Collserola), and a Catholic church, the Temple de Sagrat Cor, at the top, all of which are visible from most of the city. Designed by Enric Sagnier, the church took 60 years to construct and is topped by a sculpture of the Sacred Heart by Josep Miret Llopart. The Amusement park is the oldest in Barcelona and retains most of the original rides, some of which date to the turn of the 20th century.

Tibidabo can be reached by a funicular railway, by bus, and by car. The railway, built in 1901, was the first of its kind in Spain.

The Tibidabo funfair is the oldest of Spain and second of Europe (it dates from 1899) and currently occupies a surface area of 70,000 ms with around 30 rides. The Automaton Museum, the pioneer of the Park, remains from the former installation (with a collection of 35 wonderful mechanical puppets). There is also the renewed Aeromàgic, designed in 1935, and the aeroplane, which dates from 1928.

There is a load of info on www.bunnleisure.co.uk showing entertainment etc that is on in the 4 venues available.

The pools were new in 2005. There is a fun pool with a lazy river and a swimming pool for the serious swimmer.

The fair do a day ticket for unlimited rides at £10.

Happy Holidays from Savannah! We were there in late December a few years ago and discovered that they really do decorate for the holidays in a special way.

When it comes to airport security checkpoints, there are many passengers who only think of one checkpoint, but the reality is that there are actually three.When registering for seating on the plane will be your first checkpoint. This is the time when you will be presented with your boarding passes and when you must hand over the luggage that you would like checked.  In addition to handing over your plane tickets or requesting your boarding passes, you will need to show the proper forms of identification. These items most commonly include a driver’s license or a government issued identification card.

Once you have received all of your boarding passes, for all of your flights, you will need to hand over your luggage that you will be leaving below in the plane. These bags are commonly referred to as checked baggage or checked luggage.  As with your carryon luggage, your checked baggage will need to be checked for prohibited items. In the past, only a small number of bags were hand checked, but now almost all are.  Many of these checks are quick look-overs, but you may be subject to a random, extensive search. The searches includes looking at all the baggage compartments.

When you have been cleared to the next stage, you will need to go through the main airport security checkpoints. This point is where you will be required to have your carryon luggage scanned by an x-ray machine. You will also need to walk through a metal detector. In the past, only random travelers were asked to remove their shoes for checking. At this time, all travelers are required to remove their shoes, expect those with underlying medical conditions. Your carry-on luggage will be x-rayed along with your shoes.

By familiarizing yourself with the items that are banned aboard an airplane, including items that are only prohibited from being stored in your carryon luggage, an unnecessary incident could be prevented. In the event that you are found carrying a prohibited item, certain steps will be taken. Depending on the item in question, you may be required to return the item to you car, discard of it, mail it to your home, or turn it over to airport security.  Ensuring that you leave all prohibited items at home is the best way to prevent this unnecessary tie up, which may cause you to miss your flight.

Once you have been cleared at the main security checkpoint, you will need to go through one more security checkpoint. This is the final step before being able to board your airplane.  When entering the airport terminal, after your airline as granted permission for passengers to board, you will need to present airline officials with the appropriate boarding pass.  As this time you may need to show your identification again; however, it isn’t always necessary. If you are acting noticeably nervous then you may be pulled aside for further questioning before boarding the aircraft. That is why it is best that you stay calm during all airport checkpoints, including the final boarding stage.

Perhaps, the best way to ensure that your next flight is as pleasant as it can be is to follow all travel requirements rules.  Knowing these rules ahead of time, including the screening process, you should ensure that you are able to board your plane and make it to your intended destination without incident.
