Thirty of the fifty United States of America have selected a locally available gem, mineral or stone as the state gemstone. Found within the state’s borders, these gemstones can often be found by visitors in dig-your-own mines. There are also states where the gemstone can be found lying on the ground, and rock hunter can pick them up for just an entrance fee paid to the land owner or franchisee. As a souvenir from a trip, look for the state gems and minerals as you travel the States.

Crystalline quartz is a common mineral, and has been chosen for state gemstone by four states. Alabama’s state gemstone is star blue quartz, Georgia and South Carolina have selected amethyst as their gemstone, and New Hampshire’s state gemstone is smoky quartz.

Agates are a crypto-crystaline (meaning very small crystals) form of quartz called chalcedony. Agates are the state gemstone for three states: Minnesota with Lake Superior agate, South Dakota with Fairburn agate, and Maryland with Patuxent River stone, an agate.

There are other forms of quartz among the state gemstones. Ohio has chosen Ohio flint. Two states have chosen stones where quartz has replaced the organic parts of a living organism, petrifying the organism: Washington with petrified wood as its gemstone, and West Virginia with silicified Mississippian fossil coral as its state gemstone.

Silica is the second most common mineral on the Earth, As such, in other forms, ir has been selected as state gemstones: Oregon sunstone by Oregon, nephrite jade by Wyoming, moonstone by Florida, Chlorastrolite (aka Isle Royale greenstone) for Michigan, rhodonite for Maryland, and benitoite for California.

The remaining states have selected true gemstones, semi-precious stones or organic gems for their state gemstone. The ultimate gemstone is the diamond, state gemstone of Arkansas. Similarly valuable state gemstones are the aquamarine of Colorado and the emerald of North Carolina. The Yogo sapphire, from the Yogo River, is Montana’s state gemstone. Utah includes topaz among its mineral treasures. Texas has the Texas blue topaz. Garnet occurs in three states and has been selected as state gemstone, usually in a specific form or type: garnet in New York, grossular garnet in Vermont and star garnet in Idaho. Maine has the gemstone tourmaline within its borders, and Nevada has chosen black fire opal as the state’s precious gemstone.

The three organic state gemstones are Hawaii’s black coral, Kentucky’s freshwater pearls, and Tennessee’s Tennessee pearls. The remaining state gemstone is perhaps one of the best known gemstone, certainly in the Southwest: turquoise. This is the state gemstone of Arizona, and the semi-precious gemstone for the state of Nevada.
