As we age, our bodies begin to shut down slowly. Senses that once were keen and abilities that once were honed begin to lose their sharpness, and it can not only make us feel left behind, it can also cause problems for those we love. Sight and hearing are two senses that lose their sharpness especially as we age, though some lose their sight and their hearing before others. This can be a problem, especially for people who live together, because their needs are different. My father-in-law is in his mid-sixties, but he is still incredibly healthy. His hearing is surprisingly clear, as he seems to be able to hear and identify which of his children is coming for a visit by the sound of their car down the street. He has only very recently started needing reading glasses, but his long-distance vision is still 20-20. He spends all of his spare time working on his half-acre yard, tending the plants and ponds single-handedly.
My mother-in-law, who is the same age, has nevertheless had a few more problems with her aging. She has worn glasses for many years, and her vision is getting progressively worse. Her hearing is also failing, and she has a hard time hearing what people say even when they are in the same room. She still has an active and healthy mind, but her slowly failing senses are making life a little more difficult with every passing year. This situation is not uncommon among married couples throughout the US. One half has fairly good health, while the other is succumbing to the normal effects of aging. This can cause problems when the couple is watching television or engaging in other parallel entertainment activities. Fortunately, there are solutions to help these couples each get their needs met. One problem frequently encountered is that one person can’t hear the television, but when it is turned up it is uncomfortably loud for the other.
TV hearing aids are available to help with this issue, and they are especially helpful for those whose hearing is not bad enough to warrant the use of hearing aids all the time. TV hearing aids can be slipped over the ears of the person who can’t hear as well, and they transmit the sound directly to the hearing aids. Some models of TV hearing aids come as small, hearing aid-like ear inserts, or they may just be headphones that cover the whole ear. The model can be selected based on the person’s comfort preference. The most effective and expensive models have a small device that is hooked up to the TV, and it amplifies and transmits the sound to the headphones. Other more inexpensive models just pick up the sound emitting from the television and amplify it for the listener. These often don’t pick up the full range of sounds, so music and sound effects in movies especially can sound flat, but they work well when people are on a budget.
TV hearing aids have helped to defuse many tense situations in my in-laws’ house, because my mother-in-law can wear her headset and hear everything, while my father-in-law doesn’t have to suffer with the TV blaring too loud for his comfort. If you have older family members who are struggling with the volume on their television, each one seemingly unable to understand why the other can or can’t hear what is going on, suggest that they purchase some TV hearing aids. There are models that don’t carry the appearance of being for “old people” specifically, so if you show these models your loved ones may not feel like you are calling them old–unfortunately, many people have a hard time admitting that they are aging. Many TV hearing aids are marketed as devices simply meant to allow two people to watch the same thing with the volume set to their personal comfort level. Having one of these can make many couples resolve an issue that causes more problems than it should, and allows them to enjoy their shows and movies in mutual comfort.
